ScanWords AI

Privacy Policy

Effective 25 June 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how ScanWords AI (“we,” “us,” “our”) handles information in connection with the ScanWords AI iOS application (the “App”). Please read it together with the disclosure the App shows you, inside the app, before it recognizes a photo.

The short version

  • No account required, and we never sell your personal data.
  • Your saved words, translations and images stay on your device.
  • To recognize an object, the photo you scan is sent to Google’s Gemini AI — and we ask your permission first.
  • No ads, no analytics, no behavioral tracking.

1 Information We Process

a) Photos / images you scan. When you capture a photo with the camera, or select one from your photo library, and tap “Recognize,” that single image is sent to our third-party AI provider to identify the object and generate the word and example translations (see Section 2).

b) Vocabulary and learning data. The words, translations, romanizations, example sentences, saved images and progress you create are stored only on your device. We do not upload or store this content on our own servers.

c) Camera & photo library access. Camera access is used to capture objects to scan; photo library access is used only if you pick a photo or save a result.

We do not collect your name, location, contacts, or advertising identifiers. We only see your email address if you choose to email us for support.

2 Third-Party AI Service — What Is Shared & With Whom

To recognize the object in your photo and generate translations, the App sends the image you choose to scan to:

Google LLC — Gemini API (“Google AI”)
What is sent
The single photo you capture or select for recognition, plus the language you are learning (used only to format the result).
Who receives it
Google LLC, which operates the Gemini AI service.
How it is used
Solely so Google’s AI can identify the object and return the word, pronunciation and example sentences. We do not link the image to your identity, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.

Google processes this data under its own privacy commitments, which provide protections consistent with this Policy.

3 We Ask Before We Share

The first time you use recognition, the App shows a clear disclosure explaining what is sent and to whom, and asks you to agree before any image leaves your device. If you do not agree, the App will not send your photo and recognition will not run.

4 No Ads, No Tracking

We do not display advertising. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising/behavioral tracking SDKs, and we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

5 Data Retention & Deletion

  • Vocabulary and images you save stay on your device until you delete them in the App or delete the App.
  • Deleting the App removes all locally stored data.
  • Images sent for recognition are processed by Google to return your result and are handled per Google’s policies linked above. We keep no copies on any server of ours.

6 Data Security

We use reasonable and appropriate measures to protect information. Images sent for recognition are transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.

7 Children’s Privacy

The App is intended for a general audience and does not require an account or knowingly collect personal information from children. Because photos you scan are sent to a third-party AI service as described above, we recommend that a parent or guardian supervise children’s use of the scanning feature.

8 Your Rights

Because your content is stored locally and we do not maintain user accounts, you can delete your data directly by removing it in the App or deleting the App. For any other request, contact us below.

9 Cookies

The App does not use cookies.

10 Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy to reflect changes in the App, legal requirements, or our practices. Updates will be posted on this page with a revised effective date.
